What is hypnosis?

The ability to achieve a state of hypnosis or trance is one we all share - every time we day-dream, we are in a form of hypnosis. Hypnosis or trance occurs naturally and helps us to relax, to learn new skills, to focus our attention, and to explore meaningful alternatives. The General Hypnotherapy Standards Council defines hypnosis as: a state of mind, enhanced by (although not exclusively) mental and physical relaxation, in which our subconscious is able to communicate with our conscious mind. The celebrated American psychotherapist and hypnotherapist, Dr Milton H Erickson, described hypnosis as: primarily a state in which there is increased responsiveness to ideas of all sorts.

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a safe and effective way of treating emotional and psychological disorders, unwanted habits and unwelcome feelings, that we all experience from time to time. Hypnotherapy can also help us to enhance skills and abilities that already exist, making the most of our achievements and maximising future success. Hypnotherapy utilises the power of our imaginations to deliver changes that can positively affect our lives. Erickson sums up the effectiveness of hypnotherapy treatment: therapeutic trance is focused attention in the best manner to achieve the patient's goals.
